The Union authorities has authorized the renaming of Maharashtra’s Aurangabad metropolis as `Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar’ and that of Osmanabad metropolis as `Dharashiv’. Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis shared the information on Twitter. 

Aurangabad derives its title from the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb, whereas Osmanabad was named for a Twentieth-century ruler of the princely state of Hyderabad. 

Chhatrapati Sambhaji, the eldest son of warrior king Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, was the second ruler of the Maratha state based by his father. Sambhaji Maharaj was executed on Aurangzeb’s orders in 1689. Dharashiv, the title of a cave complicated close to Osmanabad, dates again to the eighth century as per some students. 

Hindu right-wing organisations had been demanding the renaming of the 2 cities for an extended. Fadnavis tweeted two letters from the Ministry of House Affairs to the deputy secretary of the state Normal Administration Division dated February 24. 

The letters acknowledged that the Centre had no objection to the change within the names of those two central Maharashtra cities. Fadnavis thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union House Minister Amit Shah for the choice.

The state authorities headed by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde ‘did what was promised ‘, he stated. Notably, to rename Aurangabad as Sambhajinagar and Osmanabad as Dharashiv was the final cupboard resolution of the Shiv Sena-NCP-Congress authorities which collapsed final June following Shinde’s revolt towards Uddhav Thackeray. Reacting to information, Aurangabad MP and All India Majlis-E-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief Imtiaz Jaleel tweeted that they’ll present their power for Aurangabad. “Aurangabad is, was and can all the time be our metropolis. Now await our present of power for Aurangabad. 

A large morcha for our beloved metropolis! Prepare Aurangabadis to defeat these forces (BJP) enjoying politics within the title of our metropolis. We condemn & we are going to struggle,” he tweeted. Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Ambadas Danve stated the renaming was a victory of Shiv Sena founder late Bal Thackeray’s stand. 

Danve, chief of opposition within the Maharashtra Legislative Council, tweeted that Thackeray had “renamed” the town of Aurangabad as Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar method again on Could 9, 1988. “The title of the individual (Aurangzeb) who broke the temple of Kashi Vishweshwar has been erased,” he wrote.
