My outdated buddy Prem (Lord) Sikka posted this Tweet final evening:
Lords voted 154-68 to let Tory govt change the Public Order Act by means of the again door, Unprecedented.
Our freedoms to protest gone; police have carte blanche, no accountability.
Labour friends informed to abstain on Jenny Jones’ movement. I voted for it.
We’ve got a police state.— Prem Sikka (@premnsikka) June 13, 2023
The vote in query was to dam modifications within the Act that may now permit police the only discretion to resolve when an indication is prone to trigger a nuisance or not, and so be permitted or not.
The Greens within the Lords deliberate a blocking movement that might have blocked this.
The LibDerms supported it.
So did many crossbench friends.
The Invoice may have been blocked.
However Labour stated it was not its job to dam authorities laws within the Lords, and they also abstained – letting the Invoice move.
In consequence, we now have a regulation that solely permits protests with the permission of the police.
The police are institutionally racist. They’re misogynistic. They’re notoriously right-wing. And Labour gave them the facility to find out the appropriate to protest.
No surprise Prem was livid. So am I.
